FAQ

What are the library's hours?

We are open Monday-Thursday 9-9, Friday and Saturday 9-5 and from September - May we are open on Sunday from 1-5.

How do I get a library card?

Anyone may use materials in the library.  A library card is needed to check out materials.

Persons in one of the following categories may have a library card at no charge:
* Residents or owners of real estate or personal property in the Cape Girardeau Municipal Library District.
* Full time employees of the City of Cape Girardeau.
* Faculty and students of Southeast Missouri State University
* Teachers employed in any school (public, private or parochial), located in Cape Girardeau County who teaches grades kindergarten through 12.

For those not in the above categories, library cards are available for a small fee.  The fee is $15 for 90 days or $60 for 1 year per household.  (We do have gift certificates available.)

To obtain a card, you must present proof of identification and proof of address when applying for a card.  Proof of address can be: your driver's license with your current address listed; a piece of mail addressed to you and postmarked within the last 10 days; or a lease agreement listing your name and address and dated within the last month.  Remember that you have to have your library card with you to check out materials and that you are responsible for all items checked out on your card.

How many books can I check out at one time?

You may check out up to 40 items at once on an individual card.  Please note however that you are limited to 5 VHS tapes, 5 DVD's, 3 software titles, 10 magazines and 5 CD's on a single card at any one time

.

How many days can I check out a book, movie, CD, DVD, etc.?

Most materials circulate for 21 days.  Exceptions are:
* 3 days for audio/visual equipment
* 7 days for videocassettes and DVD's
* 7 days for current holiday books, books with more than 3 holds per copy, magazines, and St. Louis Art Museum touch kits.

Do you have computers with internet access?

We have 15 computer terminals with Internet access.  Of these terminals, 10 are dedicated to usage by adults, 2 for usage by adult patrons conducting genealogy research and 5 for children.

How do I renew an item?

Most materials may be renewed twice either in person or by phone.  Videos, DVD's and audio/visual equipment may be renewed once.  Holiday books, software and materials with hold requests may not be renewed.  Please note:  If you are renewing or placing holds by phone you must have your library card number available.

What do I do if the library does not have the book that I am looking for?

You have two options if the library does not have the book that you are looking for.  If the book is a new release, popular item or a title that you think we may want to add to our collection, you may request that we purchase the book.  To do this, stop by or call the reference department and we would be happy to place your request.

You may also request a book through interlibrary loan.  We will search our database of participating libraries for your book.   There is a $1 postage fee per item when obtaining books through interlibrary loan.  An interlibrary loan book checks out for 3 weeks and, depending upon the library from where the book was borrowed, you may be able to renew the item.

What is an e-book?

An e-book is an electronic book which is viewed over the Internet.  As a patron of the Cape Girardeau Public Library, you now have access to 1000's of titles through NetLibrary.  To search the NetLibrary database you must first come into the library to set up an account.  After this you may browse and check out a book from the NetLibrary's website from any computer internet location.

Does the library have telephone books?

We have a wide variety of telephone books from cities in Missouri.  We do not have out-of-state telephone books.

In some cases a reference librarian may locate a phone number or address using the Internet.  Please keep in mind however that our reference librarians are limited to the web sites available on the public domain of the Internet for these searches.  To search a telephone number or address yourself, we recommend the following sites:
www.anywho.com/
www.switchboard.com/
people.yahoo.com/
www.whowhere.com/

How do I find out the latest book by my favorite author?

You may do an Internet search at one of the many books sites in order to find a book by your favorite author.  We recommend searching the following sites:
www.amazon.com
www.barnesandnoble.com
www.bookfinder.com

If you still can not locate the book, call or stop by the reference desk and we would be happy to search for you.
