Staff Round-Up: Part One
April 19, 2020 – Kayla Thompson, Adult Services Coordinator
Hello, people of the Cape Girardeau community!
We here at the Cape Girardeau Public Library know that social distancing can be a bit of a buzz kill even if it is very necessary to abide by the rules and regulations. It’s hard not being able to see friends, or catch a movie, or eat at your favorite restaurant, or even to hangout in the park during the nice weather. That being said, our staff is working hard to come up with ideas for projects and fun activities to do during this time.
Kayla: I’m currently reading NVK by Temple Drake. I just recently finished The Library of the Unwritten by A.J. Hackwith and Hex Life by various authors. Along with reading, I’ve been trying out new recipes in the kitchen with my little sister. So far, we have made homemade spaghetti, chicken curry, leek and potato soup, and chicken fried rice. We have also been going on long walks around the area (at least six feet from other people) with our two dogs Percy and Theo. We plan to keep ourselves occupied in the future with new Netflix shows and some fun puzzles.
Chelsea: has currently been going through the AFI top 100 movies and recommends Singin’ in the Rain and To Kill a Mockingbird. She has also been spending time reading books such as From Missouri by Thad Snow and Hill Women by Cassie Chambers when she isn’t working on homework for her masters program.
Kyle: has yet to become bored with his time at home as he bounces from taking care of his many pets (from dogs, to lizards, to snakes), to working on puzzles to reading graphic novels like Spiderman: Life Story by Chip Zdarsky. Life never has a dull moment. And when he isn’t bouncing around from one activity to another, he finds time to wind down with Netflix shows such as Ozark and Tiger King.
Janet: passes the time away by reading when she isn’t walking her adorable dog or cleaning parts of her house. She has enjoyed two of J. D. Robb’s books Golden in Death and Vendetta in Death. She enjoys rereading books on her shelf as a way to rediscover old favorites.
Chris: just bought the new Animal Crossing: New Horizons game and has been spending his time at home playing it, Borderlands 3, and rewatching movies like The Pacific and Blade Runner 2049. He takes breaks by hanging out on his apartment balcony to get some fresh air and sunshine.
Ryan: has been streaming TV shows such as Titans (DC Universe), Seinfeld (Hulu), The Office (Netflix), and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Hulu). When he isn’t catching up on his favorite television shows, Ryan likes to read graphic novels like Volumes 1-10 of The Flash and Harleen and play his favorite video game, Batman: Arkham.
Whitney: has been catching up on her nonfiction TBR (to be read) by listening to audiobooks on the Overdrive and Libby apps. She has just recently finished When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi and was blown away by how beautifully written it was. She is currently reading One Summer by Bill Bryson and is enjoying it so far.
We hope that by sharing some of the things we have been doing, you can find some inspiration, too. Though we can get pretty creative, we still love hearing about the new ideas that you all have to share. So, take a look at what our staff is doing and shoot us an email or message if you also have some cool ideas!
