1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

The concept is simple; the rewards are priceless! Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, or toddler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes, you can repeat books) before your little one starts kindergarten.

Does it sound hard? Not really, if you think about it. If you read just 1 book a night, you will have read about 365 books in a year. That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years. If you consider that most children start kindergarten at around 5 years of age, you have more time than you think (so get started!).

How to Participate

You can log your 1,000 books using ReadSquared. If you participated in Summer Reading at CGPL, you will use your same login information. It will have you enroll in a new program; you will select '1000 Books'.

For every 100-book milestone you complete, stop by the library to pick up a special sticker! We also have tote bags for little ones who want to carry their own books home from the library.

Support for 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten at CGPL is provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the office of the Secretary of State.
